Are your runs getting stale? It happens to the best of us. For me, well, I got in a rut of 3 mile runs every other day. Eventually, as you can imagine, I got bored. It got to the point where I didn’t even look forward to it anymore. And I certainly wasn’t making any progress. No seconds shaved off my time. No change in body.
I was stuck.
I went on like this for awhile before I decided enough was enough, and it was time for a change. Here are a few things I did to change things up and get more out of my runs.
- Find an incline. It’s amazing how much harder it is to run up a hill than it is to run on flat ground. Doesn’t sound like fun? Well, just think about how good it feels once the ground levels out or even declines.
- Mix in sprints. More bang for your buck. Sprint all out and then walk. Your workout will be shorter (it has to be if you’re doing it right), but your legs and butt will thank you. Just make sure you stretch well so you don’t pull a hammy.
- Change up your steps. Remember that the most injuries occur from repetitive motions. Consequently, so does boredom. So change up your stride. Short steps, long steps, high knees, backwards running. You name it.
- Go off road. A change of terrain can really spice things up. So hit the trail. It will be better for your knees too, as all the shock from sidewalk and road running can really take a toll on you.
- Run with a friend. “Running has always been a solo sport for me,” Chris from The Boerne Life told us. “But since I started running with a buddy of mine, I’ve been able to push my distances.” Not only that, but it helps relieve the boredom to have someone to chat with.
