Why Women Should Lift Weights

why women should lift weights

While exercise is a common activity for many women these days, a lot of people focus on using machines like the stair climber, the treadmill, the elliptical, and the stationary bike (check out our guide to the best Peloton alternatives). Running or jogging with the occasional push up or crunch makes up the majority of many routines.

Sure there is nothing wrong with this, but it’s important to include a wide variety of both aerobic and anaerobic exercises to any routine in order to ensure optimal health and exercise benefits are achieved from your work outs. Although some women are hesitant to lift weights because they’re afraid it will make them appear big and bulky, this is simply not true. There are plenty of anaerobic exercises that you can do that won’t make you look bulky, but will simply tone your core and strengthen your muscles.

Women should lift weights to:

  • Receive a complete, balanced work out— Typical aerobic exercises like running are not enough to keep your body at its full, healthy potential. You also need anaerobic exercises like lifting weights added to the mix if you want to get the most out of your workout regime. Try alternating your routine with jogging one day, lifting weights the next, and see if this works well for you.
  • Improve muscle strength and power— According to Forbes, weight lifting done the right way won’t bulk you up, but “can create non-bulky muscles that have stronger, thicker fibers.” This will not only aid you to be more successful in any of your athletic endeavors, but is also crucial for good muscle health and longevity.
  • Get the results they really want— Although using the treadmill and elliptical will enable you to burn calories and subsequently lose weight, that is only half the battle to getting a toned and fit body. After losing all of the weight you wish, you will need to lift weights in order to tone and perfect your body. Weight lifting will add all of the curves and muscles you desire.

The idea that lifting weights will only make a woman look bigger needs to be realized as a myth. Lifting weights in moderation will strengthen muscles, and is necessary for a good, balanced workout.
